Wheelchair Curling

This is an increasingly popular game that requires precision, strategy and strength to slide 20 kilograms of granite towards a target. Wheelchair curling became a Paralympic discipline in Turin in 2006. As we look forward to Milano Cortina 2026, here is everything you need to know about the sport.

This is a mixed team sport open to men and women with physical disabilities in their legs. During each ‘end’, each player throws two stones for a total of 8 stones per team. The goal is to get the stone as close as possible to the centre of the house to score a point. A team can score multiple points if there are two or more stones close to the centre. The stone can be thrown using the hand or an extender.

At Milano Cortina 2026. wheelchair curling competitions will be held at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium.

Olympic History

Wheelchair curling was added to the Paralympic Games at the IX Winter Paralympic Games in Turin 2006.

Players can choose whether to throw the stone alone or with a teammate, who holds the wheelchair steady. To throw the stone, athletes can use an extender to add speed and direction.

Curiosities about Italian Championships

Italy did not participate in the Paralympic event in Vancouver 2010. In its two appearances, Italy placed 7th (Torino 2006) and 5th (Vancouver 2010).
