3. What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are saved on a user’s electronic device (PC, tablet, etc.) when navigating a website; they provide certain information (‘cookies’). Cookies are then sent to the original website during subsequent navigation or to a different website that is capable of recognizing that specific cookie. Cookies act like memory for a website, allowing it to recognize the device used upon each subsequent visit. Cookies also store the user’s navigating preferences, offering a more functional experience and personalizing the website content as much as possible. In particular, the information collected via some cookies, better specified in the section ‘Types of Cookies’, may be shared with the International Olympic Committee (‘IOC’) following the user’s express consent given via the cookies banner on the website. The IOC will process the above-mentioned data for its own statistical, marketing and profiling analysis based on the indications in its own Privacy Policy available at the following link.

4. Purpose

The technical cookies used on the website aim to ensure easy and immediate navigation and do not require the user’s consent.

Analytical cookies are used to analyse and monitor the way the website is used (e.g. the number of accesses and pages viewed), perform statistics and allow us to make improvements in terms of functionality and navigation.

Profiling cookies are used to analyse the user’s online behaviour to offer targeted services in line with the user’s preferences. The provision of data is optional except for data collected via technical cookies.

Marketing cookies, including those used by the International Olympic Committee on this website, are used to track visitors and display adverts that are relevant and engaging for the user and therefore of greater value to third-party publishers and advertisers. The provision of data is optional except for data collected via technical cookies.

To learn about the individual types of cookies installed by the website, see the table at the bottom of this page.
